Directions for The Children’s Cloth of Many Colors
Becoming Involved in the Children's Cloth of Many Colors
Each section of The Children's Cloth of Many Colors is a 36”x36” square. THIS SIZE, HAVING EACH SECTION BACKED WITH CLOTH AND THE EDGES FINISHED, ARE VERY IMPORTANT TO KEEP STANDARD, SINCE THE PIECES WILL BE CONNECTED WITH MANY OTHERS OF THE SAME SIZE.
A group of children mutually create a section to their own design. Ideally, each child within the group brings a piece of cloth special to him/her. For instance, some children bring a piece from their first baby blanket, or a number from a winning sports shirt, or a piece of their grandmother's handkerchief. If more appropriate, children can do handprints with paint, draw pictures of peace, etc. on a larger piece of cloth that is provided.
The children then ask an adult to help them create their section. Some sections are actually quilted, some pieced, some tied. In every case, however, the 36”x36” square should be backed by another piece of cloth, and the edges should be finished. The pieces need to be sturdy, as they will be used again and again.
Please indicate the name of the contributing group somewhere on the section (front or back.) On the back, please indicate the complete information of your group, participants, and your complete contact information.
When the section is finished, the children infuse their feelings of what “peace on earth” will be like for them. The inclusion of these feelings gives the quilt its remarkable transformative healing power. If possible, the children should say “may peace prevail on earth” three times over their section.
If possible, please have the children write the story of their experiences doing their section, to send along to us at the address at the end of these directions. These stories are very special in bringing forth the message of the children's love. A picture of the group is also wonderful for us to have.
A related “Emissary of Peace” program, curriculum and certificate has been created for children who wish to be involved.
Donations to the Children's Cloth of Many Colors are encouraged and appreciated. Permanent sponsorship is also available. Call us for details on sponsorship.
